What is an IBCLC?

IBCLC stands for: International Board Certified Lactation Consultant

IBCLC’s are healthcare professionals specializing in the clinical management of breastfeeding. IBCLCs work with families to help achieve their breastfeeding goals and manage both common and complex breastfeeding challenges. They are the “gold standard” for lactation care.

How do I prepare for a consultation?

Please fill out the paperwork and sign the consents PRIOR to our appointment. This makes our time together more productive as we are able to focus fully on you and your baby.

I understand that babies are not predictable and run on their own schedules, if possible try and make sure your baby is hungry within the hour of our appointment time.

Gather your supplies such as your breast pumps, nursing pillows, bottles, pacifiers, etc. I want to be able to address any questions you have about these things!

I carry a small stock of flange inserts, bottles, special pacifiers, etc. Ongoing support packages include proper sized flange inserts for your pump, a bottle, and a pacifier when indicated at no additional cost.

During most consultations, your baby will be weighed at the beginning of our consult and after a breastfeed to determine milk intake and ability to transfer milk from the breast. I use the DS4500 Doran Infant Lactation Scale that is accurate to 2g.

I am an animal lover, but I do ask that any pets unsure of strangers or that may be a distraction during our time together are put in a different space for the duration of our consultation.

Insurance Coverage

Per the Affordable Care Act, lactation care is mandated to be covered by most insurance plans, however companies vary in the care that they cover.

I am currently in-network with Aetna for individual lactation consultations. Aetna clients using their insurance benefits will need to book individual consultations. Packages are available to Aetna clients who choose to self-pay.

I accept Wildflower Health for eligible Cigna members, which may cover a portion of your lactation care.

For clients with out-of-network benefits, payment is collected upfront and I will submit the out-of-network claim on your behalf. Your insurance company determines whether your care is eligible for reimbursement and how much they will reimburse.

I suggest that you call your insurance company to inquire about out-of-network lactation benefits provided by a RN, IBCLC.

Why can't I use my Aetna insurance for a package?

Insurance reimbursement varies by individual plan, so I am unable to determine a family's portion of a package in advance. Aetna clients who wish to use their insurance benefits can book individual consultations, while packages are available as a self-pay option.

Payment & Cancellation Policies

Payment is required to secure your appointment, with the exception of Aetna clients using their in-network benefits. I am able to accept both HSA & FSA payments. Cancelations that do not provide 24 hours notice will incur a $100 fee. No-shows will incur a fee equal to the price of the consultation.
